Zone Planning: Think in Zones
A boat has multiple listening zones — cockpit, cabin, flybridge, swim platform — each with different acoustic challenges. Wind noise at the helm. Engine noise in the cockpit. Water noise at the transom. Map your listening zones before specifying any equipment. Each zone may need independent volume control. A 4-zone amplifier is far less expensive than returning a poorly designed system after installation.
Head Unit Selection
Marine head unit requirements: IPX5 minimum weatherproofing, Bluetooth (mandatory), multiple zones/preamp outputs with independent volume, NMEA 2000 or FUSION-Link compatibility for chartplotter control. FUSION (owned by Garmin) makes the best marine head units at virtually every price point. For boats in the Garmin ecosystem, FUSION is the default recommendation.
Speaker Selection & Placement
Cockpit Speakers
Flush-mounted in the gunwale rail or coaming. Avoid pointing speakers directly into the sun — UV exposure reduces speaker life even on UV-rated marine speakers. Angle speakers toward the primary listening area, not straight up.
Helm Speakers
Typically 6.5" speakers near the helm face or overhead panel. These handle speech intelligibility and moderate music at the captain's station.
Amplification
The head unit's internal amplifier is adequate for a quiet marina slip. It is not adequate for underway listening or for driving more than 4 speakers. Any serious marine build requires an external amplifier. Match amplifier RMS power to speaker RMS power handling — running an amp consistently at clipping is far more damaging to speakers than running a larger amp at modest levels.
Subwoofer Integration
Marine subwoofers require custom fiberglass or marine-grade polymer enclosures — wood rots and MDF deteriorates in humidity. Location matters enormously: a subwoofer under a seat can sound excellent or terrible depending on enclosure volume and the acoustic characteristics of that space. JL Audio MX series subwoofers (10" or 12") are our standard recommendation.
Tower Speakers
Tower speakers are primarily about throwing sound at distance over wind noise. They need significantly more power than cockpit speakers for the same perceived volume because they're aimed away from listeners and must overcome distance and wind. Match high-sensitivity 8.8" or 10" tower speakers with a dedicated high-power amplifier channel.
Wiring Best Practices
- Use marine-grade tinned copper speaker wire — standard OFC wire corrodes rapidly in marine environments
- Route speaker wires away from power cables to prevent noise induction
- Use heat-shrink butt connectors for all connections — never twist-and-tape
- Fuse amplifier power leads at the battery within 18 inches of the positive terminal
- Ground the amplifier to the battery negative, not a chassis ground point
MFD Integration
FUSION-Link allows Garmin MFDs to control FUSION head units natively — changing sources, adjusting zone volumes, even managing DSP settings from the chartplotter screen. This is also a safety feature: adjusting music volume without taking your eyes off the water at the helm.
