Garmin: The Fishing & Navigation Leader
Garmin dominates the recreational fishing market. Their chartplotter interface is the most intuitive in the industry, their sonar technology (particularly LiveScope) is class-leading, and their integration ecosystem is the most mature of the three brands. If fishing is a priority, Garmin is the default recommendation.
Strengths: Sonar integration (LiveScope, CHIRP, Panoptix), ease of use, chart quality, customer support, ecosystem depth.
Weaknesses: Offshore commercial-grade robustness, autopilot performance on larger vessels, and some argue the radar technology lags Simrad's Halo doppler.
Simrad: The Offshore & Professional Choice
Simrad (owned by Navico, same parent as Lowrance and B&G) is the choice for serious offshore work, larger vessels, and commercial applications. Their AP70 and AP80 autopilots are genuinely best-in-class for heavy-duty use. Their Halo radar series was the first to bring solid-state doppler radar to recreational boaters.
Strengths: Autopilot systems, Halo radar doppler technology, commercial-grade reliability, multi-station network architecture.
Weaknesses: Less intuitive interface for casual users; sonar technology hasn't matched Garmin's forward-facing sonar for inshore fishing.
Raymarine: The Sailing & Integration Specialist
Raymarine (owned by Teledyne/FLIR) has a strong following among sailors and European powerboat owners. Their Evolution autopilot is well-regarded for sailing, and their integration with FLIR thermal cameras is unique — Axiom MFDs can display FLIR thermal imagery natively.
Strengths: Sailing instruments and autopilots, FLIR thermal integration, Lighthouse OS usability.
Weaknesses: No equivalent to LiveScope; smaller US service network than Garmin.

Radar
Simrad's Halo series introduced doppler radar to the recreational market — color-coding targets by whether they're moving toward or away from you, a genuine safety advancement. Garmin's GMR Fantom series uses pulse compression and performs excellently. Raymarine's Quantum 2 doppler is a strong competitor to Halo at a similar price point. For most South Florida recreational boaters, any current-generation radar will be more than adequate.
Autopilot
Simrad's AP series is the choice for vessels over 40 feet or with complex steering systems. Garmin's Reactor series is excellent for recreational boats up to about 45 feet. Raymarine's Evolution is particularly well-suited to sailing. For a typical 25–40-foot South Florida center console, either Garmin Reactor or Simrad AP performs excellently.
Sonar & Fishfinders
Garmin wins this category for inshore and nearshore fishing. LiveScope has no direct competitor from Simrad or Raymarine. For offshore bottom fishing, the gap narrows — Simrad's StructureScan 3D is capable, but if sonar performance for fishing is your primary consideration, Garmin is the answer.
