What Forward-Facing Sonar Does
Forward-facing sonar (FFS) shows real-time images of what's in front of and/or below the boat, updated many times per second. Unlike traditional 2D sonar — which shows a historical scroll of what passed under the transducer — FFS shows you what fish are doing right now. The fishing applications are significant: watching fish respond to a bait in real time, tracking schools as you approach, seeing whether fish are feeding or suspended, navigating shallow structure without grounding. FFS has fundamentally changed inshore fishing in South Florida.
Garmin LiveScope
LiveScope is the benchmark. Launched in 2018 and refined through several iterations, it offers the most detailed, highest-update-rate real-time sonar image of any system on the market. The LVS34 transducer (LiveScope Plus) delivers exceptional clarity in both Forward and Down modes, with Perspective mode adding a 3D-style view useful for shallow water.
Strengths: Best image quality, fastest update rate, most intuitive interface, widest MFD compatibility (any current Garmin chartplotter), best accessory ecosystem.
Weaknesses: Requires a compatible Garmin chartplotter — no cross-brand compatibility. Price is at the top of the segment.
Lowrance ActiveTarget 2
ActiveTarget 2 (2nd generation, 2023) is a genuine improvement over the original. Image quality is competitive with LiveScope in most conditions. Scout mode enables wider-angle bottom scanning useful for flats work.
Strengths: Competitive image quality, Scout mode, slightly lower price than LiveScope Plus.
Weaknesses: Requires Lowrance HDS ecosystem. Lowrance's MFD lineup doesn't have the same breadth as Garmin's.
Humminbird Mega 360 Imaging
Mega 360 is technically a different category — a 360-degree side-imaging sonar showing a full circle of underwater structure around the boat. It's more of a structure-mapping tool than a live fishing tool, updated as the boat moves rather than in true real-time.
Strengths: Unmatched for mapping structure, excellent for finding spots, unique 360-degree view. Pairs well with Humminbird's MEGA Live.
Weaknesses: Not a true real-time forward-facing sonar. Requires Humminbird Helix or Solix MFDs.
South Florida Conditions
- Everglades backcountry: Shallow (1–4 feet), turbid water, tight mangrove channels — Forward mode at short range, Perspective for flats approach
- Biscayne Bay flats: Clearer water, 2–6 feet — LiveScope excels; fish behavior easy to read
- Inshore bridges and channels: Snook, tarpon, permit in structure — arguably the highest-value FFS application in all of South Florida
